Scoop
Fonckel One is an interactive LED lighting fixture. With its patented control method, designer Philip Ross introduces a new way of interacting with light. The arc-shaped table lamp, originally named Scoop, is operated via gestures. You can literally "grab" the light beam and guide it to the desired spot on the table.
Position, intensity, direction, and beam width can be adjusted by making specific finger movements over the back of the lamp. The combination of optics, advanced gesture recognition, and plastic design gives the product an intuitive, flexible, and sustainable character.
Ross had previously received a "Valorisation Grant" from the STW technology foundation for a feasibility study. A second STW grant allowed the Scoop to be further developed into a product, laying the foundation for the company: Aesthetic Interactions.
With Fonckel, Aesthetic Interactions won the Good Industrial Design award 2012 in the ‘Functionality’ category.
Development & Partners
Developing the concept—with its patented control (under the name Lumotion)—into a market-ready product was no small feat. "Don't forget that we started with a lamp attached to a wooden block and a laptop; the whole thing couldn't even be moved."
Operating from Eindhoven, the heart of the Dutch manufacturing and electronics industry, helped significantly. It ensured short lines of communication to development partners such as ACE development & engineering (the firm that further developed the lamp as an integrator), Metatronics (software), DPI (plastic housing), and NTS Optel (plastic lenses).
"We received a tremendous amount of support from all our partners, who were very enthusiastic about the concept. They brainstormed effectively with us, including finding ways to keep the costs affordable."
