PROJECTS AT ACE
Can you tell us about your role as an Automation Engineer and Eplan specialist at ACE Development & Engineering?
Maarten: I specialize in the Eplan software, which is used to draw electrical and pneumatic diagrams. I am the Eplan nerd at ACE in Lummen. From very large machines for our machine building department to specific electrical diagrams for clients who request them, no two days or projects are the same.
My fellow engineers design the mechanical aspect of the automation project, after which I schematically draw in all the electrical applications as accurately and efficiently as possible. From intersecting wiring and switches to the latest servo drive, I take care of this part of the design. Afterwards, the other engineers can program based on the electrical diagrams, and the project manager can further coordinate the panel building.
Can you give us an example of projects you worked on at ACE?
Martin: In my 13 years at ACE, I have worked on countless projects, ranging from impressive machines for our machine building department to specific custom electrical schematics for our customers. No two days are the same and that is what makes my job so fascinating. Together with my fellow engineers, I work on the design of complex systems, where I am responsible for accurately and efficiently mapping all electrical and pneumatic applications.
Which projects appeal to you the most?
Maarten: As long as I can draw, I'm happy. The field has evolved tremendously in the last 13 years. Drawings that used to be drawn manually in 2D are now fully digitized in 3D and collaboration can be done in the cloud. The possibilities are endless and I am interested in learning as much as I can about new applications and developments. I also enjoy working with the project managers one moment and being in direct contact with the customer the next.
ROLE AT ACE
How do you see yourself evolving within ACE in the future?
Maarten: I enjoy my work immensely and see myself growing further within ACE. My interest in drawing and my expertise in Eplan make me an important link within a larger whole. I would like to experiment even more with new possibilities within Eplan and strive for even better solutions for our projects. Extensive automation when designing the schematics and links between Eplan and, for example, Siemens' TIA automation platform are certainly part of this. Within ACE there is a supportive work environment where I get the space to develop my skills while maintaining a good work-life balance. This is very important to me. I am ready for the challenge of even the most bulky schemes, 300 pages and more do not scare me. Also, allow me some time to explore, perhaps with a delicious piece of cake to feed my creativity.
